Opera singer, Jenny Lind, may have been the first international superstar. After rising to fame in her native Sweden and London, she toured the U.S. and Canada in the early 1850s. Lind’s wildly successful American tour arranged by P. T. Barnum, earned Lind $350,000 (equivalent of nearly $10 million in 2106). She donated her profits to charities, making her even more popular. Adoring fans, municipalities, and smart marketers put her name on everything from locomotives and ships to creeks and islands. There are nearly a dozen foods named in her honor, Jenny Lind Melon, Jenny Lind Soup, Jenny Lind Pudding, Jenny Lind Cake, and of course, Oysters Jenny Lind.
